You are invited... to join us for our twice-monthly visits to Independence Court Assisted Living Facility. We meet on the 2nd Mondays and 4th Tuesdays of each month in the lobby of Indy Court on Park Avenue in Quakertown. Everyone is welcome! For more information, contact Michele mbuono66@hotmail.com or Betty mom2sr17@earthlink.net

Got soda? The Quakertown Woman’s Club is collecting soda tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. Before you put that can into the recycling bin, please snap off the tab and set it aside. If you get the tabs to Betty or Michele, we will see that they get to the right people.

Do you have any used eyeglasses lying around the house? Put them to good use! Donate them to the Gift of Sight Foundation (sponsored by Luxottica Group in partnership with Lions Clubs International) where they will be repaired, classified and hand-delivered to developing countries. Every pair helps, so spread the word to family and friends. You can give them to Betty and she’ll be sure they’ll get to the proper party. Thanks!

Tolkien Trivia

September 21 – 27 is Tolkein Week, with September 22 being Hobbit Day. Below are a few bits of trivia that you may not have known about J.R.R. Tolkein.

  Tolkien, wary of the idea of any film adaptation of his works, sold the film, stage, and merchandise rights of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in 1968, and forbade the Disney studios, whose works he loathed, from ever getting involved in future productions. UA ended up never making a movie.

 Tolkien, a devout Roman Catholic, is credited with helping to convert C.S. Lewis, a former atheist, to Christianity, but was disappointed when Lewis chose Anglicanism over Catholicism.

 The Tolkien family came to England from Germany in the 18th century. Their name was anglicized from Tollkühn, which in German means 'foolhardy'.

 Tolkien married Edith Bratt in 1916, just before leaving for the trenches in the Great War. They had four children, John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla. The Tolkiens are buried together at Wolvercote, near Oxford, under the names Edith Mary Tolkien, Luthien, 1889-1971, and John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Beren, 1892-1973.

 Valley Homeschoolers Back-to-School Picnic

From Tamara: Our picnic will be Monday, September 22nd, beginning at 1:00 pm. As always, it'll be at Molasses Creek Park. For those of you who need to map quest the park, it's across the street from the Milford Township Municipal building. That address is 2100 Krammes Road, Quakertown, PA 18951.

There's quite a few new members to the group, so I'd like to explain our picnics. We have them "family style". That means we all bring something to share. Trust me, we've got a bunch of terrific cooks, snack makers, dessert bakers, you name it! I don't think there's ever been one thing that wasn't excellent. They do have grills at the park, but we've never used them. We usually get at least 100 people; lots of little ones & a bunch of teens. Adding fire to the mix makes me too nervous.

If you're planning on coming, would you please let me know what you'll be bringing? As usual, I'm breaking it down to the following:

  • Sandwich or sandwich tray;
  • Other type of "main" dish;
  • Side dish;
  • Salad;
  • Anything sweet (never can have too much chocolate!);
  • Chips or pretzels;
  • Paper products

Keep in mind that if you bring something that needs a serving spoon, or other type of utensil to access the goodness, would you please bring it?

There are electrical outlets there, but they weren't working at the last picnic. Most of us bring warm things in insulated containers & vice versa for cold.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you again. And as I said earlier, there's quite a lot of new people. I'm looking forward to meeting them & introducing them to our wacky little group. Hmm. Maybe they'll think twice after meeting us!

   Homeschool Bowling

Tamara has decided the date of the first homeschool bowling session of the new school year. It’ll be Monday September 29 probably around 1pm. We’ll meet at the Earl Bowl on Route 309, Quakertown. I’m guessing that the cost will be the same as last year -- $3.25 per game, per person. We’ll update as soon as this is confirmed.

International Day

Our 3rd Annual International Day is scheduled for Wednesday November 5. These are basically the same guidelines I trot every year. If you’ve got any questions, please feel free to e-mail me mbuono66@yahoo.com

  • International Day is open to all homeschooled children. You do not need to be a member of HSBG Club to join in the fun!
  • Int’l Day is scheduled for Wednesday November 5, 2008 at the James A. Michener Branch Library in Quakertown. We will be in the Schweiker Room . The library is located at 401 W. Mill Street.
  • Set-up will begin at 10:30am. We are open to the public 12noon – 2pm. If you are participating PLEASE plan to stay till 2pm. If you cannot stay let me know ASAP so that we’ll have a better idea of how to place your display.
  • Before choosing a country, read the list below. This is a list of countries that have already been claimed. Please do not choose one of these countries. E-mail me mbuono66@yahoo.com when you have made your choice and I’ll add it to the list.
  • I am asking for a $1 per family fee to participate in this event.
  • When you send me your "entry" please include your child/ children’s names. We like to have the participation certificates ready ahead of time.
  • As always displays can be simple or elaborate, the only limit is size. Displays are allowed ½ of a 6-foot table. If you think you will need more space please let me know ASAP. I will make a note of it and do my best to arrange it, but I cannot guarantee extra space will be available. This seems to be a very popular event.
  • If you will need an electrical outlet or to be against a wall, please let me know as soon as possible.
  • We are allowed to bring food to this event. Let’s face it, the food has become one of the big draws of this event – we all look forward to sampling "food from around the world". Please remember the library has a "no red liquids, no red sauce" policy if you plan to make something.
  • Remember November 5th only SEEMS like it’s far away. The calendar pages fly by quickly.
  • Check for updates!

Below is the list of "claimed countries". Please read through it before choosing your country.
